Report on BIM Workshop in Hamburg on 6 december 2023

On 6 December 2023 the open ITA COSUF Workshop Digitalisation of tunnels - towards BIM-based operation and maintenance took place in the Empire Riverside Hotel in Hamburg, Germany.

Highlights

The workshop was attended by almost 40 participants. Six new ITA COSUF members were welcomed. A group of international expert in terms of BIM-related operation as well as Digital twins showed with high level presentations how the future could (and will) look like and what possible loopholes we have to avoid. This gave more insight in the meaning of BIM-technology and Digital Twins in the operation of infrastructure in general and tunnels in particular. Although certain owners have already developed “master plans” for the implementation and usage of such tools, only few practical examples showed to a certain extent what actually a BIM-related operation means, how it is designed, which functions it should incorporate and what kind of functionality a digital twin needs to have if one would like to run his tunnel operation using it. It appeared that such technical approaches may influence the safety of the tunnel user but it is unlikely that tunnel operation centers become obsolete once all operational procedures are carried out using a digital twin of the tunnel.

In a round table discussion various views were exchanged on if a digital approach make things more complicated, especially from an operator’s point of view, or the value delivering features and information that eases the operator’s burden on a daily basis. The workshop gave a good overview about current initiatives and future developments.
